Billionaire support for H-1B visas have thrown a huge monkey wrench into the populist Right’s plan to ethnically cleanse America. But let’s be clear about what they’re fighting over.
Elon and Vivek want work camps. The populist Right wants extermination camps.
Look, this sounds provocative. Hyperbolic, even. But when we look honestly at the argument, this is what it reveals about the Right. Let me make the case.
H-1B visas have long been advertised as meritocratic rewards for excellence and expertise. “Worthy immigrants” have been a cornerstone of the Republican platform for decades. Reagan, a firm Bircher with ties to a wide variety of racist and nationalist organizations, full-throatedly championed immigration by those willing to join the capitalist machine that drove the elite donor class. The idea of poaching the best and brightest no matter where they came from was pure capitalist propaganda. Sure, we got to space because we poached Nazi scientists, but this attitude extends beyond “legal” immigration, and that’s where the lie reveals itself.
The real vision behind this billionaire propaganda of the H-1B program is one of captive, vulnerable workers dependent on their continued employment for their presence in the US. They cannot organize, they cannot ask for more, they cannot challenge the system. They will work, and the picosecond they become more trouble than they’re worth, they will get fired, deported, and replaced.
If Elon could replace all of Tesla – where he is accused of myriad labor violations – with a literally captive workforce of people he can fire and deport at will, he would do it faster than he reposts Nazi howler monkeys on twitter. It is absolutely the dream. This kind of legal labor camp functionality not only saves money and prevents organizing, it puts the current workforce in direct competition with that captive workforce, constantly resetting the wage floor with subsistence level compensation.
It is no secret that “illegal” immigration also drives industry and corporate profits, from agriculture to hospitality and food service to construction, to hidden pockets of manufacturing and transportation. Of course, we don’t talk about the role private equity, real estate, and crypto play in laundering trillions of dollars in cartel and kleptocrat money, and the necessity for representatives from these entities to operate in the US without a paper trail.
The other hidden advantage that Right Wing capitalists don’t talk about is how free labor mobility by a vulnerable class of worker in general helps to keep Labor at a disadvantage. Undocumented workers can’t organize, join Unions, can’t vote, or rely on social services/Union funds/industry community to get them through long strikes or shut downs. They can, however, be encouraged to cross pickets lines, or used to outright replace Union or pro-Union workers, and keep downward pressure on wages. Having ANY workers who are willing to accept less undermines the solidarity required to put pressure on employers to negotiate fair contracts; having a ready supply of desperate workers fleeing terrible conditions is a Union-busting dream.
Whether modeling 1800’s style company towns, as Musk, Google, and Meta are reportedly investing in, or more modern autocratic model of concrete worker prisons dorms, the desired functionality is the same, to turn humans with lives and thoughts and autonomy and agency into, you know, not that, so they will wrap their entire selves around that alpha grindset and live the dream 24/7 for their employer.
While this dystopian nightmare includes the idea of US workers at the moment, in truth, these schemes are far more effective with immigrants who have that employment as a condition of their residency. If Elon and Vivek and Zuckerberg and Pichai and Nadella can fill their work camps with captive immigrants, they’ll do it, and let Americans starve on the streets.
The populist Right, on the other hands, elected this bunch of Nazi fuckbags explicitly to ethnically cleanse the US, to get all of “those people” out of here. Mass deportation is a logistical impossibility that mimics the beginning of the Final Solution with such stunning precision that it’s impossible to not marry that to the bloodthirsty rhetoric of “these criminals should be shot in public instantly” on every ragebait post by Nazi propagandists. The increasing calls for bypassing due process and death as the only punishment for any crime are textbook pre-genocidal narratives leading to the wholesale slaughter of anyone deemed “undesirable”.
They want death camps.
They want public, performative cruelty and murder. Again, this isn’t hyperbole. They call for it openly on social media, on Fox News programs, on podcasts and youtube, as they praise yet another vigilante murderer, with Chaya Raichik, bottom-feeding grifter queen of Libs of TikTok ignominy, posting “where’s Daniel Penny when you need him” on every clip of decontextualized public violence by anyone swarthier than Charlton Heston in Touch Of Evil.
The flood of anti-Indian racism and violent rhetoric that exploded on twitter after Musk and Vivek defended the H-1B program was as virulent as it was expected. This struggle between elimination and exploitation was inevitable. I mean, this is literally why we use the word “Nazi”. It’s not a pejorative, it’s a functional descriptor.
On his War Room podcast, populist grifter and openly genocidal fuckbag Steve Bannon responded, “We’re not going to become some anarcho-libertarian state run by big tech oligarchs – that’s not happening. We didn’t fight all these wars and get to this point just to hand it over to a bunch of geeks who were stuffed into lockers in High School.”
But ya did, buddy. This is exactly who funded the Trump campaign the minute he came down his golden elevator like trickle down jesus. The transforming of the Republican Party from genteel industrialists and stern paternalists into howler monkeys and rageboners was funded immediately after the creation of the Tea Party by astroturf groups sponsored by Big Money, the same wanna-be oligarchs that funded Reagan, that abandoned Bush I. The GOP has ALWAYS been bought and paid for by the wealthiest of the wealthy for the sole purpose of getting wealthier. The industry might have changed, but the explicit focus on worker exploitation and oppression goes back to the robber baron days trying to recreate Dark Ages European feudalism.
it will always be more profitable to work people to death than just shoot em. One makes money, the other costs money. Imagine what it would do to the labor market if 12 million people were offered amnesty in exchange for elimination of the minimum wage? That’s essentially what Republicans tried to do under Reagan.
Tech isn’t just video games and operating systems. It’s not just social media and phone apps. It’s not just point-of-sale systems, accounting and business software, and logistics software. It’s not just start-ups and industry dispruptors.
It’s complex trading algorithms finding tiny differences in stocks and commodities prices to exploit in lightning fast batch trades with massive amounts of capital. It’s the creation and management of insanely complex securities based on mortgages, personal debt, car loans, anything they can get their hands on. It’s the creation of crypto, a vast ocean of completely fabricated value held up by the hopes and dreams of money laundering criminals and kleptocrats and young men trying to buy drugs and kiddie porn.
The amount of wealth in the “tech sector” is not just the richest companies and richest men in human history. It is the value placed in this hilariously lopsided area of our economy. The Four Horsemen of the Economic Apocaplypse – private equity, tech monopolies, exotic unregulated securities, and crypto – contain more value than the rest of the world combined. When they crash – we called 2008 in 2002, thanks – there is no recovery.
If the racist patriarchal dipshits who want to genocide non-whites and anyone to the Left of Nixon out of America think that they are the ones with the power here, they are hilariously mistaken. There is nothing they offer that is even in the same time zone as “all the fucking money”.
I’m sure our tech overlords will give us a little public cruelty and public execution of the mud races and commies as a treat, but for the rest of us who seem to think this is funny, I assure you this betrays the intention of the Right as a whole – they want us dead.
The only question is whether we die in the traces, on the streets, or at the end of a rope. And that should terrify everyone.
